“You’re Too Good for That”—Lakers Legends Say Luka Dončić Has an Even Higher Gear Left
Luka Dončić is still doing Luka Dončić things torching defenses, controlling pace, and putting up video-game numbers on a nightly basis. He’s leading the league in scoring and remains one of the most unstoppable forces in basketball. And yet, according to a couple of Lakers legends, there’s still a smoother, more devastating version of Luka waiting to be unlocked.
Following Dallas’ loss to Milwaukee, former Lakers champion Robert Horry shared his candid thoughts on Spectrum SportsNet, pointing out an area where Luka could elevate his already elite game.
“His game is predicated on getting fouls called, and the refs don’t give him a call, he starts hunting even more to try to prove the refs wrong,” Horry said. “You’re too good of a basketball player to hunt for fouls.”
The critique wasn’t meant as a knock far from it. Horry’s message was clear: Luka’s skill level is so high that he doesn’t need to chase whistles to dominate.
Earlier this season, Hall of Famer James Worthy echoed the same sentiment, offering advice that sounded more like encouragement than criticism.
“I think he’s searching for calls. He’s not getting them,” Worthy said. “Just come out, play a little more aggressive. Don’t look for the fouls. Play the game.”
Despite the discussion, there’s no denying Luka’s brilliance. He controls games with surgical precision, bends defenses to his will, and still finds ways to score no matter how physical things get. But the message from the legends is simple and powerful.
Trust the talent. Let the game flow. Stop searching, and start imposing.
If Luka fully leans into that mindset, the league might not just be dealing with a scoring champion but with the most complete, unstoppable version of Luka Dončić yet. And that’s a terrifying thought for everyone else.
