Netflix to Release “Mamba: The Life and Legacy of Kobe Bryant” — A Powerful New Documentary
In a move that has already ignited excitement among sports fans and film lovers alike, Netflix has officially announced a new original documentary titled Mamba: The Life and Legacy of Kobe Bryant — a sweeping, emotional look into the extraordinary life of one of basketball’s most revered figures.
Set to premiere globally on February 8, 2026 — a date symbolically chosen to honor Bryant’s two iconic jersey numbers, 8 and 24 — the film promises an intimate and comprehensive portrayal of the late NBA legend’s journey from prodigious talent to global inspiration.
A Story Beyond the Game
Directed by Academy Award–winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay, Mamba will blend never-before-seen archival footage, emotional interviews, and cinematic reenactments to tell the story of a man who transcended sport.
The documentary will follow Bryant’s life chronologically — from his early days in Philadelphia, to his explosive rise with the Los Angeles Lakers, to his post-retirement ventures in storytelling and youth development.
According to Netflix’s press release, Mamba aims to highlight not just Bryant’s athletic greatness, but “his relentless drive, his imperfections, and the humanity behind the Mamba Mentality.”
Exclusive Interviews and Rare Footage
The documentary reportedly features exclusive interviews with several basketball icons, including LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Pau Gasol, and Vanessa Bryant, as well as never-before-seen footage from Bryant’s personal archives.
One of the documentary’s emotional cores will center around Bryant’s relationship with his daughter Gianna, showcasing how their shared love for basketball shaped the next generation of young athletes.
“Kobe’s story is about purpose, persistence, and passion,” DuVernay said in a statement. “We’re not just looking back — we’re exploring how his energy still lives on in every person inspired by him.”
A Legacy That Lives Forever
Mamba will also delve into Bryant’s creative pursuits after basketball — including his Oscar-winning short film Dear Basketball, his venture Granity Studios, and his vision for empowering young athletes through storytelling.
Netflix’s Head of Documentaries, Lisa Nishimura, described the project as “a celebration of a man whose impact reached far beyond the hardwood.”
“Kobe Bryant was more than an athlete; he was a symbol of relentless ambition and excellence,” Nishimura said. “This documentary will remind the world why his legacy continues to inspire millions across generations and continents.”
