“Immortal but Evolving”: Buffy’s James Marsters Weighs In on the Reboot and Where Spike Would Be Now
More than two decades since Buffy the Vampire Slayer staked its claim as a cult classic, fans still can’t get enough of its sharp wit, supernatural lore, and unforgettable characters—especially the bleach-blond antihero vampire, Spike, portrayed by James Marsters. With buzz building around a possible reboot of the iconic series, Marsters is finally sharing his thoughts and where he thinks Spike would be today.
In a recent interview, Marsters reflected on his time as the punk-rock bloodsucker with a soul. “Spike was never supposed to last,” he said. “He was the villain-of-the-week. But something about him connected with fans. I think it was that raw desire for redemption wrapped in sarcasm and swagger.”
When asked about the reboot, Marsters expressed both enthusiasm and caution. “I’m excited to see Buffy live again in a new era. There are so many stories left to tell. But I hope they don’t try to recreate what we did beat-for-beat. Buffy was lightning in a bottle. I’d rather see them explore new angles in the same universe.”
But would Marsters return to the role if asked?
“Look, Spike’s a vampire—he’s not supposed to age,” he laughed. “And I’m very much aging. But in some form, sure. I’d love to be part of it, even if just to pass the torch. Maybe an older Spike mentoring the next generation, still hanging out in the shadows, cracking jokes and brooding with style.”
As for where Spike would be now, Marsters offered a surprisingly poignant answer.
“I think Spike would be trying to make peace with himself. Maybe working alone, fighting demons more metaphorical than literal. He’d never settle into domestic bliss that’s not him. But he’d still be out there, trying to be good, in his own beautifully broken way.”
Whether or not Spike rises again in the reboot, one thing’s clear: James Marsters’ portrayal of the fan-favorite vampire has left a mark as lasting as any bite.
