“It Just Gave Me the Ick”: MAFS Bride Mel Defends Instant Dislike of Groom Luke After Wedding Day Gum Chewing Sparks Awkward Start
The drama began almost immediately for one couple on Married At First Sight Australia, with bride Mel opening up about the moment she felt her connection with groom Luke begin to unravel — and it all came down to a stick of chewing gum.
Speaking about their rocky wedding day, Mel revealed that her first impressions of Luke were already shaken after he arrived late to the ceremony. But it was something that happened during the vows that truly left her feeling uneasy.
According to Mel, she had poured a great deal of emotion and effort into preparing her vows for the moment she would meet her match for the first time.
“I’d put my heart into those vows,” she explained in an interview with Daily Mail Australia. “When I noticed he was chewing gum, I thought, are you even listening to what I’m saying? This was a big deal for me.”
The bride said the moment immediately dampened the significance of the ceremony, which she had imagined would be one of the most meaningful experiences of the experiment.
As Luke realised the issue and spat out the gum, Mel said the damage to her impression had already been done.
“I had my family and best friends watching this,” she recalled. “I thought, what are they going to think? It just gave me the ick.”
Despite the uncomfortable start, Mel acknowledged that Luke did later try to recover from the awkward moment and make an effort with their relationship. However, she admitted the emotional weight of the day made it difficult for her to reset.
“The whole experience was so overwhelming,” she said. “It started on such a wrong foot and I just couldn’t calm myself down. I wasn’t myself. I was so anxious.”
Their tense first meeting quickly became another talking point among viewers of Married At First Sight Australia, a show well known for turning first impressions into defining moments for its couples.
